Just found a blog post by tzitzernak which says that the incident in the police video is not from the same day as Gevorgyan was arrested.

http://tzitzernak2.blogspot.com/2010/06/armenias-police-digging-for-excuses.html

Nevertheless, my three points above still stand. There needs to be greater professionalism and political neutrality from both police and journalists alike.

All that said, though, the two last points are the most important. That is, police must not react and instead show restraint.

Secondly, as far as I am aware, gathering less than 100 people in a public place is not a violation of the law on rallies, demonstrations, meetings etc...

The Armenian police have since posted a video of Gevorgyan swiping the hat off an Armenian policeman on their official site:

http://police.am/page.php?section=polic&lenguige=am

Anyway, three issues are raised in this case.

i) journalists should not become part of political rallies. They are meant to observe and report. Gevorgyan was 'part' of the protest as much as she was there to report on it.

ii) Regardless, the action of hitting the hat off a policeman is not enough to warrant her detention. Instead, the police must learn NOT to react in the way they do.

iii) the whole issue of access to Liberty Square is very clear as well. It is a public place and the law on meetings says no permission is required for less than 100.
