It's not so much family who have problems with us (me, husband, son, 25, daughter 21) not eating meat, but it is Armenian groups who host fundraisers, etc. There is hardly ever a meatless option for us, so we stopped going, except during Lent. We're saving money and now have more time for things we enjoy doing. I am developing a recipe for TAVA or GYUVEDJ without meat. This is a baked veggie stew which takes about 2 hours, maybe less w/o the meat. It includes potatoes, eggplpant, squash, green beans, peppers, carrots, tomatoes, onions and spices. Do you have a recipe?

All the best, May Kafafian from Michigan (via NYC)

:D This post made my day! During Armenian family (and friend) gatherings, the episode from My Big Fat Greek Wedding is often recited to me in an attempt to mock/contradict my choices and prove just how 'ridiculous' it is to forgo any meat-based foods. They have succeeded in re-converting me to their ways in the past, especially when older women who feared for my life were involved in the battle. However, I now regard the typical Armenian reaction as a fact of life and try to stick to my own choices. At the end of the day, it is MY body and nobody else suffers the consequences of what I choose to consume. Armenians will be Armenians, but at the end of the day you will always find that you earn their respect because you are willing to defend your beliefs even when you are challenged. After all, if there is one thing Armenians value more than their traditional (meaty) foods, it is their ability to be infallibly stubborn and exceptionally intellectual when it comes to defending their own beliefs against all odds. Don't you think? ;)

WOW! So it looks like I'm not the only Vegan Armenian out there. The comments above are similar reactions I receive from friends and family. When I try to explain that many studies have shown that the human body is not designed to eat animal products, they react as follows: 1st: Shocked that I am a Vegan, 2nd: Try to convince me why eating meat is good for the body.

Finally, I realize why they so profoundly go on the defensive. Because they are afraid that I just may be right. As Armenians, eating meat is indoctrinated into our culture from early childhood. Naturally, there will be resistance to change, regardless of all the logic - health, environmental, ethical, etc.

I just wish more people would see the light and realize that meat eaters are being manipulated not just by years of cultural indoctrination, but by industries (i.e.: cattle, poulty, etc) who make billions in profits from animal consumption.

But eating cadavers isn't being Arya Man(Armenian) - it comes from our beloved neighbours - so best greetings to those who want to distuurb you - they are all but not Armenian.
