– Social engineering??? – This is such an old conspirative story, I cannot listen to it any more. It simply stinks. Apparently gruesome hidden powers are still entertaining people like Steve. Who is behind the hidden powers? —> Open society? Carnegie foundation? Hillary Clinton backing Serbian policemen defending the gay parade in Belgrade?

Well, in the beginning of the 19th century there were jealous outbursts of the Armenian Apostolic patriarch (arakelagan yegeghetvoy) against “false”, “socially engineered” Armenian Catholics and the Sultan expelled Armenian Catholics in the midst of winter from Constantinople to Ankara.

Armenian Protestants were (or maybe are still) also considered socially engineered non-Armenians to divide unity.

It took years and years to find reasonable voices promoting Pan-Armenian unity. I had to read through many articles until I found finally an article from 1873 in “Mamul” (newspaper ed. in G.Bolis) putting an end to such jealousies.

Non-partisan opinions were published and in one editorial a journalist is making fun of such incredible jealousies:

An Armenian servant is applying for a job and has to disclose his religious denomnation to his new boss:

– Tell me, are you a Catholic Armenian?
– No! I am not.
– Tell me, are you a Protestant Armenian?
– No! I am not.
– Tell me, are you an Apostolic Armenian?
– No? I am not.
– What are you then?
– Well, I am a Satanist.

:=)

Many of our folks had humour in the 1870s.
So, let us not exaggerate and coninue excluding other Armenians.

In 2010 it is about time to be gay-friendly. And enlarge one’s own and our community’s horizons.
