When my Armenian relatives used the word "odar" it's always accompanied by a little sneer. Referring to someone as odar is not neutral or complimentary, it's loaded with prejudice and revulsion. Maybe things have changed now, but when I was a kid in the '70s and in the company of immigrant-Armenians and 1st-generation American-Armenians, if we'd had an urban dictionary, it would have said, "filthy, stupid, foreigner."

the word "odar" does not mean "not armenian" it only means "stranger" and it is NEVER used in a negative way...i don't know where the author brought that from. My mother has studied armenian literature as a major and i'm pretty sure "odar" only means "stranger" and in a neutral way (neither negative or positive).
When it comes to the issue of drugs and gangs, even though i do not live in the states where all that happens, i have to say it is every parent's reaction to think "my son is not like that, he learned it from his friends"... I strongly disagree with people who say Armenians never do bad intentionally, in all cultures we have the good people and the bad people, the things he mentioned made us look very racist and he generalized every small idea he had, by making readers think ALL armenians think "strangers are bad people" and "not armenian means not good"...

I have to say, I loved the choice of photos. Despite the gender difference, how similar are the Armenian women's gestures and those of the Azeri men? It's almost like both groups are either greeting each other or greeting us, the viewer. Again, great choice in photos for this piece, Liana!
