Good article. This whole French debacle highlighted the political immaturity of Armenians both inside the ROA and in the Diaspora. It really was embarrassing watching so many Armenians get excited over something so stupid. The amount of time and resources we spend on absolute nonsense is frightening.

Turkey has had five years since the Dink murder to change its penal code. Did that happen? The French bill does not add up to an endorsement of the Turkish penal code; it simply makes it illegal to aid and abet the Turkish policy of negation and denial. It is similar to hate crimes law in the US in its underlying logic:

Very poorly contructed argument that undermines much of the effort of the Armenian community. Stop trying to impose your flawed views of freedom of speech to something that has nothing to do with freedom of speech. I would go into a detailed argument to show you why your views are flawed, but instead I'll provide you an article that explains just some of those reasons.

"Failing" is not as bad as it appears; it is actually not bad at all. Genocide recognition is a one shot deal, why not keep Turkey's diplomatic and financial resources tied down against it year after year after year after year. It is actually good to lose often and win occasionally. Turkey spends enough money on this to have seen protesting editorials in the Turkish press. Some Turkish journalists even argued that it is more cost efficient to offer that money as goodwill and aid to Armenia instead!

The problem is that once Dink was murdered, the channel that could have seen the solution along the pacific lines you advocate was dammed. Turkey is a country that will not do anything unless it sees that it stands to gain or lose something, like any normal country. As long as it percieves its Armenian policies to be cost-free, it will push them. It is discovering that they are not, and it is learning that it has to deal with people it does not like on the basis of give-and-take, but this is not a lesson it will learn through passivity or genteel dialogue and advocacy -- those got Dink killed. It will be learning this bitter lesson through protests at book fairs, genocide recognition bills, lost contracting opportunities, economic boycotts, losing elections for its diplomats at international events, and a plethora of other inconveniences. It would be nice if talking and connecting and dialogue were enough, but I argue nothing other than two words about that: Ogun Samast.
