Even as a diasporan, I know several Hayastantzi women who have the worldliness, intelligence, and patriotism to run for political office. When I asked one recently if she would run for office, she giggled and mentioned a mutual male friend who should do it. Therein lies the problem. Deep set gender roles. There must be hundreds of competent Armenian women who can run for office. It is time for them to step forward and coalesce into a political force. The future depends on balance in government. It will be difficult at first but, I expect the men will eventually step aside.
