Dismissing the genocide as “different cultural narratives” is revolting and insulting. This government-sanctioned and funded event will not work as side-stepping the 800 pound gorilla in the room. Ignoring the genocide is a non-starter. Let’s start with a country taking responsibility for its actions, then we’ll eat and dance together after the reparations are accepted.

Gulen is not the problem, and his movement has never been the problem either. It is best to view this as an attempt by his Hizmet to reach out, but that is all. Gulen should be met with and talked with, but the message should clearly be that reconciliation, while possible, does entail some actual and concrete outcomes that we expect out of Turkey.

It’s important to consider that maybe the “efforts” at inclusion this article points to are a thinly veiled attempt to pay lip service to our common foods, common architecture, without having to address the issue that divides our political cultures, I.e. the genocide. many in the academic and political community have, correctly or incorrectly, taken Prof. Marashlian to task for legitimizing this event with his lecture. Needless to say, any report on this event would better serve our community if it looked below the surface and beyond the Gulen marketing machine.
