India-Armenia Friendship Chess Match Scheduled in New Delhi

An India-Armenia friendship match is being organized by the All India Chess Federation in New Delhi to take place November 30 to December 2, 2008.

The three-match team event, which is fully funded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, features players under 21-years-old and will take place at the Russian Centre for Science and Culture.

The Armenian men’s team, who won the Chess Olympiad at Turin 2006 includes Avetik Grigoryan, Zaven Adriasian, Hrant Melkumyan and Samvel Sahakyan.

The Indian team includes Abhijeet Gupta, B. Adhiban, S. Arun Prasad, Deep Sengupta, Gogineni Rohith and coach Vishal Sareen.

The three match series will be played on four boards and at the end of each day, the winning team will get two points. The team with the maximum points after the third match will be declared the winner. The Armenian team is expected to arrive in New Delhi on Nov. 28.

The friendship match comes just after the 38th World Chess Olympiad that will be held from Nov.12 to 25, 2008 in Dresden, Germany. Levon Aronian, Vladimir Akopian and Gabriel Sargissian will be taking different boards in that tournament, with players M. Minasian and Petrosian [first name unavailable] substituting for the recently deceased Karen Asrian. The women’s team includes Elina Danielian, Lilit Mkrtchian, Nelly Aginian, Siranush Andriasian and L. Galoian.
